Botanicula is a humor-filled adventure game about five friends, little tree creatures who set out on a journey to save the last seed from their home tree which is infested by evil parasites. Machinarium is our first full-length adventure game in which players take on the role of a robot who has been exiled to the scrap heap. Players must use logic, collect important items, and solve environmental puzzles to get the robot back into the city of Machinarium so he can rescue his robot-girlfriend, save the head of the city, and defeat the bad guys from the Black Cap Brotherhood. Explore the beginnings of the Samorost series in the space gnome’s original bite-sized adventure, formerly released in 2003. Now with remastered sounds, enhanced graphics, and new music by Floex.

Following that launch, I spoke to Jakub Dvorský (Studio Director and Designer/Artist on Pilgrims) about many topics including his career, Apple Arcade, Machinarium, vinyl soundtracks, coffee (of course), Phonopolis, and the future. The studio was founded in 2003 by designer, artist and animator Jakub Dvorsky, and is known for its emphasis on surreal worlds, light-hearted humour, hand-crafted appeal and audiovisual experience. Since Pilgrims (2019) and Creaks (2020), the company has been using Unity to develop its games. Amanita Design currently operates in several smaller teams, each developing a game of their own. One of them is the upcoming cardboard-built adventure Phonopolis.

Equipped with nothing but wit and courage, you slowly descend into a world inhabited by avian folk and seemingly deadly furniture monsters. Samorost 2 tells a surreal story of a space gnome whose dog just got kidnapped by mischievous aliens. Set out on a short expedition to rescue the pup, deal with curious strangers and relax to the soothing music by Tomáš "Floex" Dvořák. Our most ambitious experience to date and a loose continuation of the older Samorost and Samorost 2.

Amanita Design is by far one of my favorite developers out there, and it has been releasing quality games on mobile and other platforms for a long time. I’ve enjoyed just about every game by the team from the legendary Machinarium back in the day to newer releases like Chuchel and Happy Game. We’ve also seen Amanita release Pilgrims (Free) on Apple Arcade, and it recently left the service to get a standalone mobile release on iOS and Android.

In July 2020, Apple Arcade debuted Amanita's immersive puzzler Creaks, which was also released on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch a week later. Amanita Design's latest release is the psychedelic horror Happy Game designed by Jaromír Plachý (Botanicula, CHUCHEL) and released in October 2021 on PC and Nintendo Switch. In February 2023, Happy Game arrived onto Google Play and iOS App Store. It’s probably the prettiest, most tactile music format out there.
